Presidency 2008 or out of Iraq

Tue Jul 24, 2007 at 08:05:29 AM PDT

Presidency 2008 or out of Iraq

If you had to choose either or which one would you select?  Is this a valid concern?  Is it really either or?

The pundits on TV tell me if we proceed with impeachment, we will lose the Presidency.  They were wrong about everything else, so I don't trust them.  The reason I bring up impeachment is because I don't think we have any other option, if we want to get out of Iraq by Jan. 2009.  Some have said this war will last ten years and some are now saying 50 years.  Even the top Democratic candidates who say they will get us out of Iraq, plan on leaving some troops either in the area or nearby.  There are many who say leaving Iraq would be a retreat.  Some say the terrorists will follow us home.  Others say the terrorists win when we leave, just like when Russia was forced to leave Afghanistan.  To all that I say, it will get worse and break every thing we have left to keep this terrible war on terror going.  There are always going to be threats, but if we keep this up, it will be us against the world.

"grab-bag Gore crusade"

Thu Jul 12, 2007 at 12:13:57 PM PDT

with its wild exaggerations and hypocritical sanctimony

Today, while reading Salon, I found a blurb by Camille Paglia trashing Al Gore and global warming.  She considers herself a Liberal.  Odd, I thought everybody on our side understood the science, remembered their science classes which taught that global warming was happening and that global cooling was a side effect of this climate change.  We have known this since the 70's.

No right to smoke in public

Mon Jun 18, 2007 at 10:11:26 AM PDT

There has been some discussion today about smoking bans and related issues with smoking in public places. In my opinion we do not have a right to smoke. To all those smokers out there who rant against the smoking bans and think business should be able to allow smoking, even though it is a public and worker health safety issue, please read this diary.

What is this U.S. Public Service Academy?

Mon Apr 23, 2007 at 11:11:51 AM PDT

While trying to find Hillary's issue section, I found her speeches.  In her last speech on 4/13, she spoke about creating a U.S. Public Service Academy.  This is the first I have ever heard about a U.S. Public Service Academy.  I am wondering what is this, why do we need it, what kind of government would we become if this successful and so on.

U.S. Public Service Academy

an undergraduate school modeled after our military service academies that will cultivate a new generation of leaders dedicated to public service. The Academy would provide a four-year, subsidized college education in exchange for a five-year commitment to public service after graduation. It will help us produce a new generation of law enforcement officers, of civil servants of experts who will dedicate themselves to public service.

Owise vs. The Political Pundits

Fri Jan 05, 2007 at 09:32:18 AM PDT

What is Owise?

Owise is a web site that performs strategic forecasting in a unique way. The probability of different future events is predicted using a sort of "neural network" where each "neuron" is a human being. In effect, Owise is an implementation of a "hive mind", where many different people's analysis and insights are blended into a single consciousness.

They want your soul

Are we in 1984 yet?  Some think so.  I think we are real close to jumping off the cliff in that direction.  I found this video which spells out a lot of concepts that are pretty well known.  They don't have any solutions and it is not a good message.

An Email from my Great Aunt

Thu Apr 27, 2006 at 09:39:18 AM PDT

I received an email from my Great Aunt today.  She is mad because some people made a movie which depicts Jesus and his disciples as homosexuals.  They started a list of people who want to prevent this movie from appearing at a theater near you.

I can't possibly reply back to her with how I really feel.  I really want to reply but I know we cannot have a discussion about religion.  I am atheist.  I never believed.  Read the email and tell me what you think.

Party in November w/Poll

Fri Apr 21, 2006 at 02:57:35 PM PDT

Found a wonderful article by Amy Sullivan over at the Washington Monthly.  "Not as Lame as You Think" is worth your time.  Amy tells us the Democratic party has a strategy and it is working.  That strategy is more than letting the Republicans self destruct.  The Democratic plan is more than covering their own asses.  Maybe it isn't a plan at all.  We are not privy to that kind of intel.  More after the flip.

Stirring the hornets nest

Wed Apr 05, 2006 at 12:58:49 PM PDT

A report written in July of last year, before the bombings in London, wisely predicts more violence in direct retaliation for the Iraq war.  This article in the Guardian has the skinny:

The report, International Terrorism: Impact of Iraq, was drawn up in April last year - before the London bombings - and sent to senior ministers, including Tony Blair. It warns that Iraq had "reinforced the determination of terrorists who were already committed to attacking the west and motivated others who were not".

It adds: "We judge that the conflict in Iraq has exacerbated the threat from international terrorism and will continue to have an impact in the long term."

The JIC report, leaked to the Sunday Times, says: "There is a clear consensus within the UK extremist community that Iraq is a legitimate jihad and should be supported. Iraq has re-energised and refocused a wide range of networks in the UK." The JIC describes Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, head of al-Qaida in Iraq, as an "increasingly iconic figure" who is becoming the new "bin Laden", according to the newspaper's account of the report.

"Had enough?"

Mon Mar 27, 2006 at 10:03:03 AM PDT

This morning I came across a really good slogan for the Democratic party.  This slogan is probably not the best we can do, but still, it works.  The surprise is that the slogan comes from a Republican!  "Had enough?" is a direct quote from Newt Gingrich.  Time

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail"

Fri Mar 24, 2006 at 10:12:30 AM PDT

I received this email today about some Sheriff in Arizona.  I guess he is sort of a hero to the type of people who like prisoner abuse.  I for one do not understand the joy these people get out of punishing other people.  Is it really fun to torture?  Should we allow this kind of abuse just because the people getting tortured are criminals.  What a world we are building.
